Coronavirus updates: S.A. had 103 new COVID-19 cases reported on Friday

Every day, MySA.com compiles the latest headlines and helpful links on the COVID-19 pandemic in the San Antonio area.

Increase attributed to jail population: The San Antonio area saw another hefty increase in new COVID-19 cases Friday, pushing the total to 1,477 — 103 new cases, considerably higher than has been reported in recent weeks.

But County Judge Nelson Wolff noted the increase was due primarily to increased testing at the Bexar County jail, where an outbreak has been sweeping through the inmates and staff.

“Out of those (103 new cases), 91 were at the jail,” Wolff said. “There were only 12 out in the community — 12 is the lowest number since we’ve started, That’s a positive sign.”

Wolff said the majority of the inmates testing positive are asymptomatic but are being separated from the rest of the jailed population anyway in efforts to reduce the spread of the virus.

More deaths: San Antonio officials reported 48 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and two more deaths on Thursday. The new cases brought the total for Bexar County to 1,374 since the start of the pandemic.
