Houston coronavirus updates: What you need to know for June 8

Chron.com is following the latest headlines on the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on the Houston area.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Houston has continued to steadily increase, leading to a spike in hospitalizations. 

Texas saw the single-day largest increase of cases since the pandemic began on Saturday; the state reported a 2.65 percent increase, or 1,928 cases, bringing the total up to 74,701, according to the Houston Chronicle’s data team. Saturday’s count also marks three straight days of more than 1,800 new cases. An additional 20 deaths were reported by Saturday, bringing the statewide death count up to 1,830.

As of Sunday evening, the statewide total increased by 1.2 percent, or 881 cases, for a total of 75,582. An additional seven new deaths were reported; there are now 1,837 deaths in Texas.

In the Houston region, cases increased by 1 percent, or 194 cases, for a total of 20,005. One additional death was reported, bringing the region’s death count up to 390.

Harris County saw a 1.1 percent increase, or 163 new cases, and is now at a total of 14,586 cases.
