SATURDAY UPDATE: Shelby County COVID-19 cases now at 34

The number of confirmed positive COVID-19/coronavirus cases in Shelby County has more than tripled in the past week and stood at 34 in a tally provided Saturday by the Texas State Department of Health Service.

That was an increase of two additional cases from the 32 reported Friday evening by Shelby County Judge Allison Harbison. A week ago, on Saturday, April 4, Shelby County had 10 confirmed cases reported.

The number has continued to rise over the past week as more testing for COVID-19 is being done and more cases have been confirmed.

This past Sunday and Monday the number of confirmed Shelby County cases stood at 11; they increased to 13 on Tuesday; 17 on Wednesday; 23 on Thursday; and up to 32 by Friday evening.

In Nacogdoches County the state on Saturday was reporting 30 confirmed cases with 2 deaths. However, late Friday, the Nacogdoches Emergency Management Office reported five new cases of COVID-19. That brought the county’s total to 36.

Elsewhere in Northeast Texas, Angelina County had 16 confirmed cases on Saturday, according to the Texas State Department of Heath Services. Rusk County had 14, Panola County, 10 and one death; San Augustine County had 9 confirmed cases and one death; and Harrison County had12 cases and one death.

The Tyler area of Smith County continued to lead Northeast Texas with 93 confirmed cases as of Saturday with one death. Gregg County had 39 confirmed cases and one death, according to the state.

Across Texas there were 12,561 confirmed cases Saturday with 254 deaths. State health officials said there had been 1,617 victims who have recovered. Harris County continued to lead Texas in number of cases and deaths with 3,261 confirmed cases and 40 deaths.

Dallas County on Saturday had 1,537 cases and 25 deaths, state health officials reported.

Across the Sabine River in DeSoto Parish, there have been 114 confirmed COVID-19 cases and seven deaths. Caddo Parish cases stood at 974 with 39 deaths on Saturday.

In Bossier Parish there have been 178 confirmed cases and nine deaths. More than half of Louisiana’s total confirmed cases and deaths were in the New Orleans area with 10,412 cases confirmed in Orleans and Jefferson parishes and 402 deaths out of the state’s total of 806 reported as of Saturday.
