India’s coronavirus cases breached the 1800-mark, according to the figures released by the health ministry on Tuesday morning. There are 14,759 active Covid-19 cases in the country, 590 people have died of the disease while 3,251 have been cured/ discharged.

The Centre has termed the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) situation “especially serious” in Mumbai, Pune, Indore, Jaipur, Kolkata and a few other areas while forming six ground teams to assess the situation and issue directions, even as it warned all states against diluting national lockdown rules, as some states conditionally lifted select restrictions of the lockdown – in place till May 3.

The government has selected 16 projects — spanning vaccines, drugs and technologies — for funding under the Covid-19 research consortium.

Globally, there have been 2,437,170 reported coronavirus infections from which 167,594 people have died, according to an AFP tally.

The UK reported its highest weekly death count on record as the damage caused by the coronavirus epidemic continues to rise. Deaths in care homes more than quadrupled compared with the week previously.

There were 18,516 deaths registered in the week ending April 10, 76% more than the average figure for the same week over the previous five years, the Office For National Statistics said Tuesday. The difference is significantly more than the ONS officially attributed to the virus, suggesting the official count may miss many deaths caused by the epidemic.

33 new Covid-19 cases in UP’s Rae Bareli, district total jump to 35

Thirty three fresh Covid cases were reported in Rae Bareli district on Tuesday taking the total number of the Covid- cases in the district to 35.

Chief Development Officer, Rae Bareli, Abhisek Goyal said the 33 people, who had come to the district from outside, were quarantined in the premises of an institute and their samples were sent to SGPGI, Lucknow laboratory for test. Italy to start easing coronavirus lockdown from May 4: PM Conte

Italy will announce before the end of this week its plans for the gradual reopening from a lockdown imposed to fight the coronavirus emergency that will be applied starting from May 4, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Tuesday, reports Reuters.

“I wish I could say: let’s reopen everything. Immediately. We start tomorrow morning … But such a decision would be irresponsible. It would make the contagion curve go up in an uncontrolled way and would nullify all the efforts we have made so far,” Conte wrote in a Facebook post.

“We must act on the basis of a national (reopening) plan, which however takes into account the territorial peculiarities.”
